Against The Current feels like a punk band pulled straight out of the mid-2000s.

A lot of people might read that sentence and see it as an insult – so, to be clear, I mean it in the best way possible.

Bandmembers Chrissy Costanza, Dan Gow and Will Ferri are delivering powerful, poppy, and catchy tracks that have the same vibes that were present in the glory days of Fall Out Boy, The Wonder Years, and the Jonas Brothers.

And – to make things even more appealing – when Against The Current play live, the band themselves feel they have experienced a real improvement in performance quality over the past few years, as well.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the band feel like this bout of changes has been a natural progression of their style, passion and art.

“I feel like there was a big shift when we first got back to it after the pandemic,” Dan explained. “Putting out [our latest EP] Fever… it was a fresh start. We tapped into something a little more different and natural. Lots of energy.”

When pushed on whether this was something their label, Fueled by Ramen, urged them to do, he stressed: “It just kind of happened naturally. We released Fever and it lit a fire under us. We noticed the shows had a different energy.”

Chrissy agreed wholeheartedly: “Even the last six weeks we’ve been out [touring] you see the progression from show one to the final show. I felt like I couldn’t even sing [new single] Silent Stranger from the first show… and from the last show, you don’t even think about it.”

Thankfully, British and European fans will be getting a taste of this fervour and talent in the coming days.

Against The Current are currently in the UK playing some of their biggest British shows to date. And they’re keen to make it as special as possible for their fans.

“It’s nice going to Europe and the UK,” Chrissy smiled. “As they’re some of our favourite places, and where we’re really comfortable because we’re just going in at the peak from the start.”

Surely, though, after such powerful singles as Silent Stranger and well-received EPs as Fever, there must be some new music on the horizon, right?

Wrong. “We need to get some studio time after this tour,” Chrissy confessed while referencing their thematic release schedule. “The plan is just to continue on the path of the ‘Nightmares and Daydreams duality’. Theoretically, the next track is a Nightmares track, but we haven’t confirmed or denied that just yet.”

The trio confirmed they have “an album’s worth of songs” in the hopper… but they aren’t ready to let them see the light of day.

Chrissy explained: “We’ve always been perfectionists since the beginning. That’s why we’ve always been slow at releasing new music.

“Whenever we released something that we haven’t been 100 percent happy with it’s, transparently, been because our label pushed for it. We’ve always been of the mindset that we’d rather sit on it [music] until it’s perfect.

“For us, I think it’s always going to be quality over quantity. We can write songs all day long, so the more songs you write the more chances you get of getting a good one. We’d rather take a lot of swings at it.”
