Bride slams attention-seeking wedding guest for upstaging her with dress choice

A woman has slammed her wedding guests after she broke one of the most important rules of wedding attire and upstaged her on the big day.

Kim, who lives in Australia, detailed the incident on Reddit, where she was flooded with sympathy from other users who branded the guest’s intentions as “attention-seeking”.

The Bride – who chose not to disclose her full name – said: “The woman is a friend of my mother’s. They’re friends because they worked near each other.

“We aren’t related on the flight and, to be honest, aren’t that close. She has known me since I was a child. I have never been anything but nice to her.”

Kim was completely baffled to see the woman turn up to the wedding in a white lace gown dress, which had been tailor-made specifically for the event.

She went on: “She had told my mother that she was having something made to wear to the wedding but neglected to tell him the colour. The first time I noticed it was when she got up while I was giving my vows to hand me a handkerchief as I was crying.

“It didn’t really click with me that she was wearing white. I was more bothered by the fact that she had gotten up since she was a guest and not connected to the wedding.”

One disapproving commentator responded to the incident by saying: “There’s no way she didn’t know what she was doing. I don’t know what goes through these people’s heads.”

Another eagle-eyed user wrote: “I like that she went to the trouble of getting a dress made, but not to match any of her accessories.”

Though wedding attendees are expected to dress up for the occasion, dress etiquette is a major factor for women attending the ceremony.

Women are encouraged to wear a formal gown, but risk upstaging the bride if it is too extravagant, has a plunging neckline or is paired with a headpiece or train.

On reflection, Kim claims that the memory of the overdressed barely stands out to her anymore, and describes the incident as an “insignificant blip in the day”.

She added: “My wedding was the greatest day of my life. I worked and saved incredibly hard for it, and it paid off. All I remember was the day I finally married the love of my life and how fun we all had.”
