Save £80 on energy bills by taking advantage of warmer temperatures | Personal Finance | Finance

Les Roberts, content manager at Bionic, said people can quickly accumulate savings by avoiding using the tumble dryer and other appliances during the longer days of the spring and summer.

He explained: “The average 9kg tumble dryer costs just shy of £2 a cycle to run for a one–hour cycle, on average.

“Although this doesn’t sound like a lot, if you are running the dryer multiple times a week, the price will quickly stack up.

“Hang clothes to dry outside naturally instead and by not running the dryer twice a week for the months between May to September you could save £80.”

He also encouraged people to turn down their thermostats as temperatures increase, as turning this down by just one degree can reduce energy bills by 10 percent.

He said Britons can also take advantage of the longer days to reduce their usage of lights around the house.

He commented: “Make an effort to turn the lights on in the house when necessary later in the evening and take advantage of natural light.”

The savings expert also encouraged people to update their electrical appliances as older machines tend to be less energy efficient.

He said buying a modern appliance is a good investment despite the initial cost. He stated: “Although spending money on new appliances sounds counter intuitive when we’re discussing saving money, more efficient models cut the KwH used significantly, so running costs will be much lower and over time, the money spent on the appliance will be made back in savings.

“The energy rating of large electrical devices should be printed on the energy label and ranks efficiency from G to A with A being the most efficient model.

“Make sure to take note of the energy label when you are next comparing appliances on the market.”

People can also make sure their home is as energy efficient as possible by getting it checked by an accredited assessor.

They will provide an Energy Performance Certificate for the property along with a list of recommended improvements.

Tom Edmunds, general manager at Wunda Group, said people can look at upgrading with smart technology to slash their bills.

He said: “As heating and hot water account for more than half of a household’s energy bills according to the Energy Saving Trust, we always advise homeowners to consider implementing Smart heating solutions as they are not only beneficial during the colder winter months, but also during months that see more varying temperatures.

“With the warmer weather settling in, it is the opportune time to revamp and upgrade home heating controls in preparation for the autumn, especially as we don’t know if our heating bills will be increasing.

“One simple option is to install a smart heating system that allows for easy temperature control at the touch of a button, such as with the WundaSmart System.

“Smart heating can help reduce energy consumption by allowing users to ‘smart zone’ their homes, turning off heating in unused rooms and maintaining optimal temperatures in frequently used areas if the temperature drops below a degree of your choosing.”
