Boston woman killed in shark attack off island in the Bahamas, police say

A tourist from Boston was killed in a shark attack Monday off the coast of Nassau, Bahamas, police said.

The 44-year-old woman, whose name was not publicly released, was injured about 11:15 a.m, according to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force obtained by NBC Boston.

She was paddleboarding with a relative away from the shoreline at behind a resort in western New Providence, “when she was bitten by a shark,” police said.

A resort lifeguard pulled the victim and her male family member from the water and into a rescue boat, and administered CPR on her, police said.

“The victim suffered significant trauma to the right side of her body,” police said.

Emergency medical technicians examined the woman, police said, and determined she “showed no vital signs of life.”

The victim was a guest at Sandals, the resort said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of a guest while on a paddleboarding activity nearly a mile from the shore. We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the guest’s family and loved ones,” the statement said. “We remain in close contact with them and are providing all support possible during this difficult time.”

New Providence is an island of the Bahamas.
