The Crown actor Stephen Greif dies aged 78 | Ents & Arts News

Stephen Greif, who appeared in The Crown and Blake’s 7, has died at the age of 78.

Greif had a long stage and screen career, and also appeared in soaps Doctors, Coronation Street and EastEnders.

His representatives at Michelle Braidman Associates said: “With great sadness we announce the death of our wonderful client Stephen Greif.

“His extensive career included numerous roles on screen and stage, including at the National Theatre, RSC and in the West End.

“We will miss him dearly and our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

The actor, who was born in Hertfordshire, went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and become a member of the National Theatre Company at the Old Vic and Southbank theatres in London.

He starred in several stage shows in the 1960s and 1970s, before making the jump to screen to appear as Travis in Blake’s 7.

It ran from 1978 to 1981, and he starred alongside Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow and Sally Knyvette.

He also appeared in three series of Citizen Smith, played Signor Donato in Casanova and Commander John Shepherd in Shoot On Sight.

In 2020, he portrayed Speaker of the House Sir Bernard Weatherill in the fourth series of The Crown.
